Festive Overwhelm?

Feeling it?

I know I am and it is a feeling that is pretty hard to ignore.

For some of us who live with any kind of chronic health condition, Christmas/December/Winter can present challenges. Even just the stimulation of this time of the year can kick someone who is fully well in to a sense of overwhelm. So how can we manage this when our energy is the most precious and valuable thing? Here are a few little tips that may help….

  1. Set boundaries and be clear about what you want and need each day.

  2. Don’t beat yourself up about getting things perfect. It really doesn’t exist. Focus on what brings you joy.

  3. Give yourself unconditional persmission to wing it, and cheat at Christmas dinner if you need to.

  4. Try to maintain your routines and the things that you know will keep you well. Stick with what works for you food wise, try to maintain your normal sleep pattern and if movement is part of your life keep at it.

  5. Try to get outside if you can, even for just a few moments. A walk, sitting in the garden for a short while or even just spending some time next to a window allowing yourself to feel natural light.

  6. Let people help if they offer, but also don’t be afraid to ask for help too.

And finally, and this is a big one and you may need some help with this. Try to connect to something that you want or need from this time of year and allow yourself some of the lovely things that this season represents to be about you too. It doesn’t have to be much. It could be a walk along the beach, or a quiet afternoon watching a Christmas film. Whatever it is - let it be.

Merry Christmas and lots of festive hugs.
